Why your PNG won't cut properly
A PNG is a grid of pixels. Cutting machines follow paths — the blade needs a line to trace. When you upload a PNG, Design Space treats it as a Print Then Cut image: it prints your artwork and cuts a single outline around it. Vectorizing first gives every color its own path, so each layer cuts on its own mat.

The two settings that decide your cut quality
1. Color count — keep it between 2 and 6
One color equals one material layer. A 4-color trace gives you four clean mats. A 32-color trace gives you hundreds of slivers no blade can physically cut, and a weeding job you will abandon halfway.
2. Smoothing — fewer nodes, happier machine
A trace that follows every pixel step creates thousands of nodes. Design Space lags, and the blade chatters along the jagged edge. Higher smoothing fits longer curves through the same outline, so the file is lighter and the cut is visibly cleaner.

When you upload a PNG, Cricut flattens it into a Print Then Cut image with a single outer cut line. Only a true SVG carries separate paths per color, which is what lets the machine cut each layer on its own mat. Vectorizing first is the difference between a printed sticker and a real layered cut.
Fewer colors, cleaner cuts
The single biggest quality lever is color count. A 4-color trace produces four tidy layers; a 32-color trace produces dozens of slivers your machine cannot physically cut. Start low and only raise the count if detail is genuinely missing.
Keep the node count sane
Design Space slows to a crawl when a path carries thousands of nodes. Veclify's smoothing produces fewer, longer Bézier curves instead of one node per pixel step, so files stay light and the blade tracks smoothly instead of chattering along a jagged edge.
Transparent background, no white box
