Why your PNG won't cut cleanly

A PNG is a grid of pixels. Laser software reads vector paths to decide where to cut or score. Feed it a pixel image and it either engraves the whole rectangle or guesses at edges. Vectorizing first gives the laser a precise outline to follow — cut strokes and engrave fills exactly where you want them.

The two settings that decide your cut quality

1. Color count — keep it simple

One color equals one operation layer. A 3-color trace gives you a clean cut plus a couple of engrave shades; a 32-color trace gives the laser dozens of tiny regions to thrash over. Start low and only raise the count if detail is genuinely missing.

2. Smoothing — fewer nodes, faster jobs

A trace that follows every pixel step creates thousands of nodes. LightBurn previews slowly and the job runs long. Higher smoothing fits longer curves through the same outline, so the file is lighter and the laser finishes sooner.
